Home is where most people today choose to die, when given the choice.  However, only 25% of people die in their own home.  Dying at home can be a huge burden on the family, and most dying people want to avoid being a burden – this is precisely where hospice can help.

Hospice care is provided in the patient’s home, or any private residence, an apartment, a nursing home, assisted living facility or a hospital.  Hospice comes to you – you do not have to come to hospice.  Although there are many hospice facilities – places that take care of hospice patients only – most patients choose to die at their personal residence.

Hospice staff will usually schedule their visits to you on your own terms.   Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, they typically desire to meet you where you are, when it is convenient for you.  Care planning for your loved one involves just that – meeting the patient where he or she is, and not forcing them into some mold that does not fit.

To be welcomed into your home to care for your dying loved one is a great honor, and most staff truly respect that and appreciate it.  Your loved one can be in surroundings that are comfortable to her, and you can get the help you need to take on this responsibility.  Caring for someone you love dying at home will likely be difficult, but it may turn out to be one of the most rewarding and meaningful experiences that you can have at home.
