Why share memories?

FULL ARTICLE

Growing old together means sharing a bond of love, and of life.  This takes on a special meaning when the end of life is near.  Although your time together is now limited, don’t stop living now.  Use the remaining time to continue to connect to your loved one, to continue to grow and build on the bond that was created in the past.

Even when survival is uncertain, say good bye to your loved one.  A good goodbye is one with your heart strings attached.  Messages of “I love you” and “I always will love you” stand out in our hearts, and we carry these forever.  When a person is diagnosed with a life limiting illness, there exists despair, fear and loneliness.  By keeping your relationship alive, by sending messages of thanksgiving for time together, messages of love, you will allow true growth to occur.

Medical matters are important, but don’t fret over them.  Do what you can today, what you need to do.  But once treatments are administered, then continue to live a life of sharing.  Don’t stop trying to connect, even if you run into roadblocks.  Your dying loved one is dealing with issues mostly beyond our comprehension – be patient, and listen.

Tell what is happening in your life, the details of what your day was like.  Share the things you use to share before the illness began.  Let your loved one share their remembrances, let them ramble on about old times, old memories.  Bring in family members and allow the sharing to grow.  Allow one on one time with other members of the family.  Finally, thank your loved one for the time that you had together, the time that you and your love together shared life.
